Frequently Asked Questions

What are the signs of a language disorder?

A language disorder may be present when a child is delayed in acquiring and using language to access their environment. They may use gestures more often or struggle to formulate words using verbal language. For those who are non-speaking, or are limited verbal, we offer other supports to aide in effective communication. See below for AAC FAQs.

Where will services be provided?

Services may be conducted in the home, at our clinic in Santa Monica, or through teletherapy. Please inquire to discuss which option would be best for you!

What is play-based and child-led therapy?

Child-led therapy is an approach that focuses on the interests of the child to lead through therapy instead of an adult-directed therapy session. This oftentimes improves organization of the sensory system and intrinsic motivation to communicate.

What is AAC?

AAC stands for Augmentative and Alternative Communication. It involves using various methods and tools to support or replace speech for individuals with communication challenges.

Who can benefit from AAC?

AAC is designed for individuals who have difficulty with spoken communication, including those with developmental disorders, neurological conditions, or acquired communication disorders.

How do I know if my child requires AAC?

AAC may be considered when a person's current means of communication (such as speech) is not meeting their needs effectively, or when there's a desire to enhance communication skills.

What are the different types of AAC systems?

AAC systems can be low-tech or high-tech. Low-tech options include communication boards and books, while high-tech options involve electronic devices, tablets, or computer software.

How is the appropriate AAC system determined for an individual?

The selection of an AAC system is based on the individual's communication needs, abilities, and preferences. Speech therapists conduct assessments to identify the most suitable system.

Is AAC only for non-verbal individuals?

No, AAC can be beneficial for a range of communication abilities. It is not limited to non-verbal individuals; it can also support individuals with limited verbal skills, gestalt language processors, or those who struggle with certain aspects of communication.

How does AAC impact verbal speech development?

AAC does not hinder verbal speech development. In fact, it can facilitate language growth by providing a means for communication, reducing frustration, and promoting language understanding. At AVST, we meet the client where they are at in their language journey.

I am unfamiliar with how to use these systems. Do you provide trainings?

Yes, we offer trainings to support families, therapists, team members, and educational centers on best practices and how to support the AAC user.

Do you accept insurance?

AVST does not currently accept insurance. However, we are able to provide a superbill to you for your insurance company to cover any out-of-pocket reimbursement.

What if I am not able to afford out-of-pocket expenses?

You have options! The Regional Centers of CA have developed an amazing program to help families receive the support they need. Self-determination is a voluntary regional center program that provides participants with an individual budget, which they can use to purchase the services and supports they need. Please visit https://www.cvrc.org/self-determination-program/ for more information.

What is your attendance and cancelation policy?

We understand things come up! However, a 24 hour notice of cancelation is required. Client’s will incur a fee of $75 if appointment is cancelled within 24 hours.
